I have the great privilege to be part of the Made in Adelaide 2018 delegation at Edinburgh Fringe and am in Edinburgh from 3-13 August. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with international and Australian colleagues and to see lots of great shows. Here is just a selection of what I’ve seen or am seeing and other recommendations.

 

The Spinners

MUST SEE!! Powerful and mesmerising contemporary dance choreographed by Lina Limosani and Scottish physical theatre artist and director Al Seed with dancers Tara Jade Samaya and Kialea-Nadine Williams telling the story of the Moirai – the Fates of Greek mythology. Highly recommended and has received 5 Star review by Anne Winter in The Guardian “Intelligent, captivating and superbly performed.”

Midnight Marauders

The high energy and powerful voice of Carla Lippis with an awesome backing band make this a great night out. Part of the Made in Adelaide program and featuring different guest artists every night.

Prom Kween

Two gals, two guys and a drag queen wanting to be RuPaul stage a high school musical about a trans prom queen.  Has some enjoyable and fun moments but somewhat confused about what it wants to be.

Werewolves

The wonderful parlour game by Adelaide-based Nick Phillips. Audience members have to work together to identify the werewolves before all of the villagers are all killed off. Always entertaining and different every night. A great midnight show.

Kathy Lette’s Girl Talk

Squarely aimed at my demographic, women over 40 who love a girl’s night out with a sprinkling of celebrity gossip. Kathy Lette is a great story teller, there are jokes, a bit of bad-taste aussie humour and insights into raising a son with autism.

Jonny Woo’s All Start Brexit Cabaret

The wonderful Jonny Woo is joined by guest artists on a cabaret ride through the brief history of Brexit. All original songs by Jonny Woo and Olivier Award-winning composer, Richard Thomas (Jerry Springer The Opera). A great 6pm show and start to your evening.

My Left Nut

Catching this one soon at Summerhall on recommendation from Adelaide Fringe Director Heather Croall. “The true story of a Belfast boy growing up with no father guiding him through and a giant ball to weigh him down.”

Pussy Riot: Riot Days

Maria Alyokhina from Pussy Riot is performing in this show based on her book ‘Riot Days’. “Riot Days merges punk, electronica, theatre, documentary footage and protest. Andrew Rae and the Music Machines

Horrendous hormones, awkward bodies, and homework: you might remember how bloody awful being a teenager is, and you didn’t even have a moon for a head. Award-winning graphic novelist Andrew Rae’s Moonhead and the Music Machine is a psychedelic, gorgeously illustrated coming-of-age-and-beating-the-bullies story centred on one unusual boy and his gift for making music. Andrew brings a gang of illustrators and musicians for a night of performance and live drawing, with tunes from Electric Fields from Adelaide.
